There is a growing imperative to support historians to think more rigorously and collectively about their work as teachers and educators. Fragmentation of subject expertise since the demise of the national Higher Education Academy make this an opportune moment to develop a centre to strengthen subject-based professional development for new and experienced teachers and leaders.

Drivers include:

  • student fees, increasing expectations and student satisfaction
  • transition issues from school to university history
  • pressing challenges of addressing new technologies, employability and public engagement issues
  • increasing demand from policy-makers for greater collaboration between universities.

Establishment of the Centre will put East Midlands’ historians in pole position when bidding for national grants and developing impact case studies for REF2020.
